Is your hot tub prone to foam?

Check out what might be causing it and how to stop your hot tub from turning into a bubble bath.

There are many reasons as to why your hot tub could be foaming. Let’s take a look at the most common causes:

Makeup, shampoo, hairspray, body lotions, oils and deodorant can make your spa work overtime and eventually cause hot tub havoc. The more of these products you take into the hot tub the more likely it is that the water will foam.

Fabric detergent and soaps are also major culprits. Any leftover detergent can cause a problem when trying to balance your water chemistry.

Cheap chemicals, although may be more convenient could actually be more hassle than they’re worth. Cheaper alternatives may not be as effective and may even cost you more in the long run. Hot tubs are all about relaxation so remember to buy wise when it comes to chemicals.

Now we know what’s causing it – it’s time to fix it!

Looking for a quick fix? Anti-Foam is the answer! Anti-Foam will cause the foam to break up and be captured in the filter to restore clean and clear water. Be sure to clean your filter once the foam has been removed (preferably after 12 hours) this will stop anything that was causing your water to foam, and also stop it from being introduced into the water.

If the foam continues, it means it’s time to drain down your hot tub. This is the best and most direct way to get rid of foam. Drain and refill your hot tub every 3-4 months. Whilst doing so, replace your disposable filter if needed.

Once your water is fresh and clean, follow these easy steps to prevent foam returning:

  • Shower with fresh water before soaking in the hot tub. This will wash off all the soap residue, makeup, deodorant and body oils.
  • Make sure bathing suits are cleaned and rinsed with fresh water before getting in the hot tub.
  • Avoid going underwater. Long-haired soakers should use a bobble to keep their hair up.
  • Avoid buying cheap chemicals. Get the right chemicals from a trusted hot tub retailer.
  • Keep drinks away from the hot tub to avoid the risk of spillages in the water.
  • Drain and clean the hot tub regularly. Do this every 3 to 4 months.

Following these simple steps mean more time hot tubbing and less time defoaming!
